Denver Basement Finishing Tips: Turning Your Basement Into a Gym

Have you decided to finally make use of the space in your basement by transforming it into a home gym? If you’re tackling this Denver basement finishing project, it’s important to keep these tips in mind:

Install fans.
Basements can get stuffy fairly quickly, so if you plan on working up a sweat in your basement, you will need to think about air circulation. It’s recommended that you install ceiling fans to keep air moving if the ceilings aren’t too low. If you don’t have enough height to install fans, consider plugging in individual fans in various spots throughout the gym to keep you cool.

Brighten the space.
Working out in a dark and crowded space doesn’t seem very appealing, so make the room more bright and airy to motivate yourself to workout. Adding windows is a great way to do this, but if it’s not possible for you to do so, then consider putting up a wall of mirrors instead. You should also paint the walls a light neutral color such as tan, pale yellow, or white. Doing this will instantly make the room appear larger and brighter, plus it helps you watch your form as you work out.

Don’t forget about lighting! Avoid any low-hanging or freestanding light fixtures in your new home gym. Instead, use recessed lighting to light up the space.

Soundproof the room.
Other people in your home don’t need to be aware of what you’re doing in the gym, especially if you work out in the early morning when everyone else is asleep. As you remodel your basement, consider adding fiberglass insulation between the ceiling and floor joists to provide a bit of soundproofing to the room. Use interlocking foam mats.
If you basement has concrete floors, which most basements do, you might want to consider laying down interlocking foam mats on the floor. These mats are perfect for the gym because they’re easy to clean and comfortable to lay on if you decide to do some ab work on the floor. It’s also much more inexpensive to buy these mats than it would be to lay down an entirely new type of flooring.

Hang motivation on the walls.
What inspires you to push yourself while working out? Figure out what motivates you and then try to incorporate it into your gym design. For example, do you love reading inspirational quotes when working out? If so, then find posters with your favorite sayings, frame them, and hang them around your new home gym. If you are an athlete, hang some of your championship medals or team photos around to inspire you to push through a tough workout.
