When to Splurge and When to Save on Denver Basement Finishing

May 10, 2017

The cost of basement finishing projects in Denver will vary depending on exactly what you plan on doing in your basement. If you are on a tight budget, you may be curious as to how you can save money without sacrificing the quality of the finished project.

Follow these tips if you want to learn when you should splurge and when you should save when finishing your basement:

Splurge: Ceiling Insulation

Ceiling insulation can prevent the noise from your basement from disturbing people upstairs, and vice versa. This means you will be able to work in peace in your new home office or turn up the volume in your new theater room without worrying about whether other people in your home can hear you. Learn about the types of insulation.

Save: Shelving

If you want to add more storage space in your basement, buy freestanding furniture instead of trying to build custom shelves. You will barely be able to tell the difference between furniture and built-in shelves once the project is complete, so it’s definitely not worth paying more for a custom job.

Splurge: Lighting

Basements can be dark and dreary, so if there’s one area that you should definitely feel comfortable splurging in, it’s lighting. You can install recessed lighting throughout the basement, and then use focal point lighting to highlight certain areas. For example, if you have built a bar in your basement, you may want to install pendant lighting or track lighting to shine a spotlight on this area of your basement. You may also want to install dimmers so you can change the mood of the basement by adjusting the amount of light in the room.

Save: Open vs. Closed Space

Try to keep the floor plan as open as possible when designing how you want your new basement to look. If you decide to close off certain parts of the basement to create separate rooms, you will have to spend more on doors, studs, and drywall. This is not a good use of your budget, and it’s also a poor use of the space, so stick to open floor plans only when finishing your basement.

Splurge: One Show-Stopping Feature

Choose one show-stopping feature that you want to include in your new basement and then feel free to splurge on it. For example, if you are creating a home theater, the splurge may be a large, flat-screen TV or a group of incredibly comfortable reclining chairs. If you are creating a gym in your basement, you want to splurge on buying a new treadmill or elliptical and save on other aspects of the gym such as the free weights. What you choose is completely up to you—but feel free to discuss your decision with your remodelers to make sure you made the right choice.
